The invitation to “become what you are” (an expression taken from Saint John Paul II’s document Familiaris Consortio) might seem odd at first: How can people become what they already are?  Upon deeper consideration, we discover that the whole arc of Christian anthropology – creation, fall, redemption – is contained and revealed within this expression. Creation establishes what we are: men and women made in the image and likeness of God. The fall has not eradicated our fundamental identity as image of God, but it has robbed us of our likeness to the Trinity (see Catechism 2556). Seduced by an enemy, there now lurks in the human heart a desire to be “like God” but “without God” (see Catechism 398). It is the redemptive power of the Holy Spirit poured into our hearts through the Body of Christ that enables us to “become what we are”: men and women destined to be “like God” as God truly is, thus loving as God truly loves (see Catechism 734-735).
